THE likelihood of the Kansas City Chiefs leaving their famous Arrowhead Stadium one day has increased.

Legislators have approved a plan for luring both the Chiefs and Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals away from Missouri.

The measure to authorize state bonds to help finance new stadiums and practice facilities for both teams has been agreed.

They could be on the Kansas side of the metropolitan area of 2.3 million residents, which is split by the border with Missouri.

The plan is from the Republican-controlled Legislature.

While Democratic Governor Laura Kelly has stopped short of promising to sign it, she said in a statement that "Kansas now has the opportunity to become a professional sports powerhouse."

"We're excited about what happened here today," Korb Maxwell, an attorney for the Chiefs who lives on the Kansas side, said.

"This is incredibly real."

The lease on the Missouri complex which houses both the Chiefs and Royals runs until 2031.

The Chiefs have indicated they want to stay at Arrowhead long into the future, but the Royals have said they won't play at their Kauffman Stadium beyond the 2030 MLB season.

Earlier this year, the Chiefs had their Arrowhead future thrown into further doubt as residents rejected a new tax plan to fund renovations.

Residents of Jackson County, Missouri, resoundingly voted down a sales tax measure that the Chiefs were hoping would help with renovations to Arrowhead, and the Royals wanted for their proposed new park.

More than 58 per cent of voters ultimately rejected the plan, which would have replaced three-eighths of a cent sales tax that has been paying for the upkeep of Truman Sports Complex - which houses both stadiums - with a similar tax that was planned for the next 40 years.

The Kansas City Chiefs were always a big deal, but recent events have made them an even greater asset.

Under coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs have created the NFL's newest dynasty.

The Chiefs won the 2020 Super Bowl with victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
