RED Flag food items can get you stopped at airport security and even force you to miss your flight.

Most of us are familiar with downing a bottle of water before passing through security at major airports.

However flyers now face an increasingly complex set of rules on what they can and cannot take on board an aircraft.

Some flyers who fall foul of the rules vent their frustration on social media.

One posted: "Keeping America safe by getting an explosive expert to test my wife's protein powder," one traveller wrote in an X post addressed to the TSA.

"Current wait time 20 minutes."

"I just got yanked aside by TSA," said another. "The shaker cup packed with protein powder was the red flag."

Now website Travel.nine.com has put together a refresher course of flyers who don't want to be held up at the gate.

For domestic flights within Australia, there are no restrictions on how much powders, liquids, aerosols and gels you can carry onboard, according to the Australian Border Force.

However they must be in containers of 100 millilitres or 100 grams or less. Any containers above this size limit will be confiscated.

The exemption list includes baby formula, prescription and non-prescription medications.

The Sun's own 'Flight Attendant' travel expert recently revealed some tips for UK flyers.

She said: "First and foremost, the new scanners might be in place in your local UK airport, but they aren't in place in a lot of holiday destinations.

"Plenty of airports in Greece, Spain and other favourite destinations haven't updated their security systems just yet, meaning anyone planning to take bigger bottles with them should be prepared to leave them behind.

"No one wants to think about their flight home before they've even left the country, but it will affect how you pack your suitcase.

"Therefore you should check whether or not your destination airport has the new scanners in place before you travel.

"If not, I'd recommend just packing your liquids as you ordinarily would for a flight - in 100ml bottles, in a see through plastic bag."

UK airports with new scanners already in place

Here's a list of the UK airports that have already introduced the new scanners

  1. Newcastle Airport
  2. Aberdeen
  3. London City
  4. Southend
  5. Teesside
  6. Birmingham Airport
  7. Leeds Bradford

Fortunately for Brits, the rules haven't fully changed just yet and even airports that have the new scanners up and running aren't letting people carry liquids of more than 100ml.
