North Carolina State (11) vs Marquette (2) betting preview

The NC State Wolfpack are red-hot after an ACC Conference title, a first-round win over No. 6 Texas Tech, and a win over No. 14 Oakland. Now, they’ll take on a No. 2 seed in Marquette. Against Oakland, it took overtime, but the Wolfpack beat the Golden Grizzlies, 79-73, out-scoring them 13-7 in overtime. DJ Burns Jr. scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds, while DJ Horne added 11 points and six boards. Mohamed Diarra had 11 points and 13 boards. In all, five players scored double-digit points. They shot 45.3% from the field, under 35% from beyond the arch, but out-rebounded Oakland 50-36.

As for Marquette, they beat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the Round of 64 and took down No. 1 Colorado, 81-77. They had a halftime lead of 45-34, but the Buffaloes responded, scoring 43 points in the second half. Five players for the Golden Eagles scored double digits as only seven players recorded a stat. Tyler Kolek appears all the way back from his oblique injury. He dropped 21 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds. Kameron Jones had 18 points and four rebounds. They shot 61.8% from the field, 42.9% from three, and were out-rebounded 30-25, losing the offensive rebound battle 12-3.

NC State vs Marquette analysis

Throughout this tournament, Marquette has simply performed on the offensive end of things. Against Colorado, they shot over 62% from the field, and they shot nearly 48% against Western Kentucky. Against Colorado, they also shot just shy of 43% from beyond the arch. They scored 87 in the first game and 81 against Colorado, so they’re averaging 84 points per game this tournament. Kolek appears, as mentioned, unphased by his injury, and he and Jones are putting in the work. As for NC State, they’ve seen a ton of production from Burns Jr. and Horne, as well as from Diarra. He’s had a double-double in each tournament game and isn’t stopping.

That said, NC State’s defense leaves a bit to be desired. They allow nearly 73 points per game this season, and teams shoot 44% from the floor (164th), and 34.3% from three-point range (214th). To be fair, Marquette hasn’t performed all that much better.

NC State vs Marquette pick

Marquette has been tested during this tournament, but some would argue they really shouldn’t have been. They came out slow against Western Kentucky, and while Colorado has some great weapons, Marquette is still a No. 2 seed, and Colorado was a First Four squad.

NC State has the offensive pieces in Burns Jr., Horne, and now, Diarra, to keep pace while these defense, which are closer than you’d expect, battle it out.

Teams shot 42.5% from the floor against Marquette and 33.6% from beyond the arch.

Look for this to be a closer game.

NC State covers, but Marquette pulls it out.
